Cardiff University researchers have conducted a study of almost a quarter million U.K. teenagers. The results show that even among underaged vapers, interest in traditional tobacco smoking has remained low.

The study, which canvassed 13 to 15 year olds from England, Scotland, and Wales, gauged the interest in traditional smoking among those who reported vaping. In 1999, 70 percent of respondents believed that it was “OK” to try a traditional cigarette. 16 years later, only 27 percent of that age group still responded that way.

Moreover, in 1998, 60 percent of respondents reported that instead of mere comfort with smoking experimentation, they had actively engaged in the practice. By 2015, only 19 percent of respondents reported having engaged in smoking.

Researchers conclude that these findings “provide little evidence that re-normalisation of youth smoking was occurring during a period of rapid growth and limited regulation of e-cigarettes from 2011 to 2015.”
